I just read your strip and “that” Word just caught my thoughts again. In German the verb “blamieren” means to embarrass, shame or disgrace. The Noun is “Blamage,” so every time I see that title I have to laugh a little bit.

So, back in 2005, I wrote this comic strip which contained the punchline “Joss Whedon is my master now.” And shortly afterwards, I decided it would make a good tee shirt and printed my first batch. It was a huge hit and an instant best seller for me.

Not only that, but the shirt seems evergreen. It’s been a top-seller for me since 2005. For a shirt design to sell that steadily through reprint after reprint for four years is more than any cartoonist or tee-shirt peddler could ever hope for.

The shirt has gotten a lot of mainstream love. I know that Joss has seen it and been asked about it. Back when the Serenity movie debuted, all the articles focused on how it was really fan-driven and mentioned the phrase and sometimes the shirts. The Browncoats totally support it and PvP because of it. It’s even made it into the buffy comic book.

And the weird thing is that nobody really knows it’s from a PvP comic strip. It’s really taken on a life of its own. There are even two or three other tee-shirt vendors online bootlegging my design and remaking the shirt themselves. I’ve seen, maybe…3-4 different versions of it. I’m not going to do anything about it, because it’s not like they’re reproducing my strip. I’ve made a good amount of cash from the sentiment and I’m excited to see it just kind of grow into the zeitgeist.

This article and it’s follow up might be an indication that the Joss shirt is finally going to start dipping in sales for me. Maybe it’s time to retire the shirt. It’s had a great run.

I will tell you this: I don’t think that the cancellation of Dollhouse makes Joss any less of my new master. It certainly doesn’t make the Star Wars prequels suck any less and it doesn’t make my Buffy, Angel or Firefly DVDs turn into black dust.

Anyway, the article made me realize that shirt has been around since 2005. I had forgotten that.
